澳洲过去曾遭受乾旱、火灾与洪水等天然灾害重挫，再加上春季良好的气侯，皆成了鼠患肆虐的温床。
自2020年春季以来，澳洲新南威尔斯州遭受数十年来最严重的鼠患。近日老鼠数量仍持续激增，更大举入侵惠灵顿（Wellington）惩教中心，当局已下令，在月底前将400多名囚犯转移至其他监狱安置。
根据《BBC》报导，近日惠灵顿惩教中心的鼠患非常严重，屋内天花板、电线皆遭老鼠咬穿或咬断，许多基础设施也遭受严重破坏，还有一些老鼠死在牆洞内，不但造成屋内环境臭气熏天，腐烂尸体更引来不少蚊虫。

据报导，惠灵顿惩教中心目前已停止开放探监，并预计在月底前完成约420名囚犯和200名工作人员的转移工作。大多数工作人员将被重新部署到新州西部地区的其它惩教中心，囚犯则将被分散转移至其他监狱关押。

对此，新南威尔斯州矫正服务厅（CSNSW）专员塞弗林（Peter
Severin）也宣布，为保护工作人员与囚犯的健康，将监狱关闭4个月并同时进行清洁、维修作业，并且做好防范措施，以免类似情形再度发生。
