6 月 17 日上午,翻译界泰斗、北京大学新闻与传播学院教授许渊冲先生在北京逝世,享年 100 岁。
许渊冲是谁?
生于军阀混战的乱世,炮火中求学于西南联大,27 岁留法,30 岁归国;他是钱钟书的得意门生、杨振宁的同窗挚友、俞敏洪的授业恩师;首获国际翻译界最高奖 ” 北极光 ” 的亚洲翻译家……
这一堆 ” 标签 ” 不如他在名片上印的简单直接:

有人婉言相劝:这会不会显得 ” 不谦虚 “?他理直气壮地回应:” 这是实事求是!我的名字比名片还响!” 是的,他有十足的底气——
因为他,中国读者认识了于连、哈姆雷特、包法利夫人、罗密欧与朱丽叶……
因为他,西方世界知晓了李白、杜甫、白居易、苏东坡、李清照、汤显祖……

从夜里 ” 偷时间 ” 的人
畅春园的一栋老楼,总有一抹暖色很晚才沉入夜幕,那是许渊冲书房的灯光。退休以后,许渊冲每天在那里对着台式电脑,从晚上十点工作到凌晨三四点。晚上对他而言是黄金时段,是 ” 高产期 “。
每天连续面对电脑屏幕长达六七个小时,许渊冲乐此不疲,坚持将自己每日的翻译成果一字一字地敲进电脑文档。
在耄耋之年,许渊冲仍然制定了 ” 每天翻译 1000 字 ” 的工作计划,93 岁时制定了翻译莎士比亚全集的目标。

” 要将一个国家创造的美
转化为世界的美 “
1948 年,许渊冲赴法留学。新中国成立时,许渊冲身处巴黎,在心中抱定读成归国的志向。

两年后,31 岁的许渊冲学成归国。在大学执教的同时,继续着自己对翻译事业的热忱。之后几年时间,他出版了英译中《一切为了爱情》、中译英法《毛泽东诗词》等,成为我国将中国诗词译成英法韵文的第一人。
毛泽东的诗词中有一句” 不爱红装爱武装 “,许渊冲将其译为 “To face the powder and not to powder the face”。在英文中,”face the powder” 意为 ” 面对硝烟 “,”powder the face” 则意为 ” 涂脂抹粉 “。这两个地道表达是许渊冲大二阅读英国报纸时默默记下的,此时妙手拈来,豪迈勇健的巾帼形象宛然在目。
1983 年,许渊冲到北大教书,后来陆续翻译了英文或法文的《诗经》《楚辞》《牡丹亭》等中国古典文学作品,也将《红与黑》《约翰 · 克利斯朵夫》等外文佳作译到国内。

他曾说,把一个国家创造的美,转化为世界的美,这是世界的乐趣,也是他翻译诗歌的初衷。他不仅尽最大可能保留诗歌的音韵美,更采用了外国人能看得懂的表达方式,真正实现了翻译中的文明互通,架起了一座中外语言之桥。

” 好上加好,精益求精
不到绝顶,永远不停 “
2017 年 2 月,许渊冲做客《朗读者》节目。96 岁的老人拄着拐杖,徐徐迈入会场,颤巍巍递出了一张名片——” 书销中外百余本,诗译英法唯一人 “。乍一听,似乎有些张狂的意味。可他立马解释道:” 我实事求是!”
许渊冲的家中,高悬着 ” 自豪使人进步,自卑使人落后 ” 的条幅。房间里那些塞满旧著新作的书架,是他数十年的翻译实践累积,是他的底气。

” 好上加好,精益求精;不到绝顶,永远不停 “,这几句简短直白的话,是许渊冲对自己的学术要求。躬耕译林,许渊冲乐在其中,” 不知老之将至 “。他常常忘记自己的年龄,只有在面对蝇头小字的书本需要拿放大镜时,才会感叹一句 ” 确实是老了 “。
2007 年,他被医生诊断为直肠癌,断言只有 7 年可活。2014 年他却神采奕奕地站在领奖台上,成为摘得 ” 北极光 ” 杰出文学奖的首位亚洲翻译家。

许渊冲的翻译之道
许渊冲在翻译古诗时自有一套理论。他认为,翻译是追求两种语言的 ” 双赢 “,求真是低标准,求美是高标准;等值的翻译容易失掉诗的精华,并且难以出精品。
与其将诗翻译得味同嚼蜡,嘴里像嚼着一大块黄油面包似的,不如在不失真的情况下使其优化和再创,以确保原诗的内蕴和存意不流失,在音形上更熨帖、更醒豁,使读者能从中体味诗词艺术的音韵之美。
为了追求译诗艺术的高峰,许渊冲在翻译上遵循孔子提出的 ” 从心所欲不逾矩 ” 的理念,提出 ” 以创补失 “” 美化之艺术 ” 的中国学派翻译理论,即 ” 意美、音美、形美 ” 三美论、” 浅化、等化、深化 ” 三化论和 ” 知之、乐之、好之 ” 三之论,成为翻译理论界的一大成果。
不管风吹浪打,胜似闲庭信步般走过一个世纪,他的秘诀就是如此简单——心无旁骛。” 我为什么能活这么久啊?因为我每天都在创造美。我的翻译是在为世界创造美。”
