翻车鱼是巨大却温和的深海动物，却有摄影师捕捉到海狮捕食，而翻车鱼硬生生被「吃掉一大块」的照片，相当憷目惊心。摄影师赫尔曼(Richard
Herrmann)专精拍摄野生海洋生物，他经常在IG帐号@richardherrmannphotography分享摄影作品，先前在美国加州圣地牙哥外海捕捉到大自然罕见的一幕。
赫尔曼在文章中表示，「在2014年海洋变暖之后，加州沿海地区的饲料鱼数量大大减少，以至于海狮开始以翻车鱼为食，而翻车鱼在厚厚的刺骨保护之下，唯一可食用的就是柔软的腹部。」照片中可以看到，一条大约3公尺长的翻车鱼竟被海狮从腹部狠狠「撕咬」下一整块肉，且被海狮疯狂啃食，甚至几乎只剩下半个身体。
据了解，翻车鱼虽然繁殖能力强，不过牠们在水中的移动速度慢，也毫无自卫能力，而且反应过于迟钝，所以容易被其他鱼吃掉，导致牠们的存活率相对较低。然而，加上人类大量捕捞，近年来翻车鱼的数量更大幅锐减。世界自然保护联盟(IUCN)也于2015年将翻车鱼列入「濒危物种红色名录(Red
List)」物种，期许人类能够尽一份心力保护牠们。
