一名墨西哥官员周二表示，墨西哥北部，靠近美国边境的一个移民拘留中心发生火灾，造成39人死亡，29人受伤，情况严重。
美联社报导，火灾发生在美国与墨西哥接壤的华雷斯城(Ciudad Juarez)，这座城市与美国德州的艾尔帕索(El
Paso)接壤，被美国-墨西哥边境围牆隔开。。
据一名因匿名的救援人员表示，这个拘留中心大约有70名移民，大部分是委内瑞拉人，失火原因还不清楚，墨西哥总检察长办公室已经展开调查。
现场的照片显示一片惨况，长排的遗体包在银色床单下，各地救护车、消防员和货车涌入现场。

华雷斯城是非法移民进入美国的主要过境点，当地龙蛇杂处，治安极其混乱。但是许多人也在此地等待机会，拘留所裡挤满了等待机会过境的移民，向美国申请庇护，并等待程序的移民。
每个月大约有
20万人试图越过边境，过墨西哥前往美国，除了墨西哥人以外，还有来自中美洲和南美洲的移民，他们申请庇护的理由包括家乡贫困、治安问题、面临暴力威胁等等。
国际移民组织 (IOM) 最近一份报告指出，自 2014 年以来，约有 7,661 名移民在前往美国的途中死亡或失踪，988
死于事故，或者死于半途。
